Red ONDURA corrugated asphalt sheets were recently chosen for the roof of a new bandstand at City Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. The stadium is the home field for the Richmond Kickers, a professional soccer team that is popular with local families and soccer enthusiasts.
The bandstand was built on the stadium grounds to provide a stage and shelter for local bands during the home games. On March 26th, opening night, the first band on the stage played to a very large crowd of Kickers’ fans.
The stadium property is owned by the City of Richmond and is managed by Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. The bandstand was considered a permanent improvement on city property and required a series of approvals in order to get permission to build and install the bandstand.
We needed and obtained approvals from the following government departments:
- Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities
- Richmond Zoning Administration Division
- Richmond Permits and Inspections Bureau
In addition to those approvals, ONDURA and the bandstand design faced another level of scrutiny due to the public use and history of City Stadium. We needed approval from the Richmond Commission of Architectural Review, the city’s official historic preservation body that is charged with reviewing all exterior changes to structures within the city’s Old and Historic Districts and issuing Certificates of Appropriateness for those projects that it deems to be appropriate.
We are proud that ONDURA and the bandstand received all of the required approvals from the City of Richmond, including the Richmond Commission of Architectural Review. Furthermore, the bandstand and ONDURA roof passed all inspections by the Richmond building inspector.
The management team for the Richmond Kickers and the local bands are delighted with the new bandstand. It is a welcome improvement at City Stadium.
