We know that selecting a new roofing system is not easy. There are many options available and, like most other building products, each roofing system has its own pros and cons. In order to help you as you begin your evaluation, we offer here some thoughts and comparisons that you might find helpful.
Shingles still remain one of the most popular roofing products, though they aren’t without some drawbacks. Not only are high-grade shingles hard on the pocket book, they are vulnerable to a number of types of weather damage. They can blow off in high wind, curl or bake from beneath in high heat, and they can allow melting ice to seep below to underdecking and other materials. They offer little thermal protection, meaning that they can transfer heat to and from your home. Shingles also add considerable weight to the roof, ranging from 210-360 lbs. or more per 100 square feet. Also, if installed improperly, an unattractive ‘zipper’ pattern can appear.
