ONDURA/METAL COMPARISON

We know that selecting a new roofing system is not easy. There are many options available and, like most other building products, each roofing system has its own pros and cons. In order to help you as you begin your evaluation, we offer here some thoughts and comparisons that you might find helpful.

Long-considered one of the toughest roofing materials available, metal does have a few pitfalls to take into account. Metal roofing can only be applied over non-metallic existing surfaces (when dissimilar metals make contact, deterioration can occur). Professional installation is recommended due to the special tools and skills required. Metal is notoriously noisy during rain and hail, which can alarm livestock and other animals. It can also rust and decay, especially in the corrosive environments found in many agricultural applications (fertilizers, chemicals, condensation, etc.).

The benefits of Ondura vary based on whether it is used in new roofing or re-roofing applications (see below):

New Roofing:

  • Ondura costs less than painted metal roofing panels . . . and is often less expensive than unpainted galvanized metal roofing

  • Unlike metal, Ondura is guaranteed to never rust

  • Can be installed over open purlins (non-residential structures without interior ceilings, such as barns or sheds) or solid decking

  • Ondura is simpler to install than metal roofing, and there are no sharp edges. It is also more flexible in “truing up” the roof line

  • Ondura is less prone to condensation or corrosion . . . particularly when subjected to fertilizers, chemicals and animal confinement

  • Ondura is much quieter than metal, as it buffets the sound of rain, wind and hail

  • Ondura is backed by the industry’s only Lifetime Limited Warranty

Re-Roofing:

  • Ondura costs less than painted metal roofing panels . . . and is often less expensive than unpainted galvanized metal roofing

  • In order to re-roof, metal often requires the removal of the existing roof; Ondura can be installed over a variety of existing roofing, including shingles (up to 2 layers), metal, and wood

  • Ondura is thermally neutral, meaning that it won’t react negatively with other surfaces (no corrosion or deterioration)

  • Ondura is much quieter than metal, as it buffets the sound of rain, wind and hail

  • Ondura is backed by the industry’s only Lifetime Limited Warranty
